I watched
as the birds left.
my heart tugged in time
with their wings and
i hoped, the cold would come.
but, Winter
took to the open road
and lost its way.
sent us postcards and letters,
dated four days ago.
each the same
and different, with
worn edges and faded
longhand.
there will be, no Winter this year.
no frozen fingers or warm soups.
no thick blankets or fireplace memories.
no crisp mornings or fogged breath.
Winter, broke our hearts
and left us only
with the fading bodies,
of birds on the horizon.
Winter sends us its regards,
each message
coming further and further apart,
like our sweating lips.
there will be, no Winter this year.
